I have two new works in a group exhibition at John Buckley Gallery called “Conversations” which is on over the summer until 11 February 2012.

The exhibition includes works from Su Baker, Lesley Dumbrell, Jennifer Goodman, Katherine Hattam, Christine Healy and Hilarie Mais.

I’m a bit excited about my work “Theodora” which despite only being 64x64cm, took months to complete (and countless blades). A real labour of love reminiscent of the handiwork crafted by the women left behind as their sailor men travelled the world looking for fame and glory.

Tim Olsen Gallery is a gorgeous gallery in Woollahra and I am looking forward to my first exhibition with them in 2012.

Meanwhile I have work in the stockroom so Sydneysiders can pop in and see my work up close.

The pieces are designed as talismans or mementoes that sailors might leave with their loved ones, or bring home to them, during the long, arduous and dangerous sea exploration journeys that were undertaken by the likes of Abel Tasman, Captain Cook and Francis Drake. These journeys were taken with fortune and glory in mind, in search of an undiscovered paradise which was  believed to exist just beyond the boundary of the world as known to Europeans.  We know the consequences of these voyages were far more complex and far less triumphant than the sailors envisaged. But the discovery of the wonders of these beautiful places,  so exotic to European eyes, was the dawning of a gradual and imperfect understanding of the world we all live in.

KINGS ARI 2011 STUDIO ARTIST EXHIBITION

FAIL HARDER delves into the notion that experimentation and failure are key elements to a well rounded studio practice. Often the biggest failures lead to the best unanticipated outcomes. Featuring our nine resident studio artists, the risk of failure is confronted head-on as they spend three days and nights together in the gallery participating in an intensive making frenzy. The community of a shared studio is amplified while innovation and insight into process are highlighted in this year’s annual KINGS ARI studio exhibition.

As part of the annual exhibition KINGS Studio Artists will be opening their studios to the public on Saturday 28 May from 4-5pm. This is a great opportunity to meet the artists and gain an insight into the unique studio environment at KINGS ARI.
